My first Black Friday...

Yesterday morning, my sister and I ventured out to Joanns. I've never been out on Black Friday before, but really wanted to go as flannel (my fabric "drug" of choice) was on sale for just $1.49/yd, compared to regular price of $5.99.

Fortunately, Joanns is quite a distance from the actual mall. And it's located on the back of a really small shopping center, so by going to back way in, there was virtually no traffic. We got there a few minutes before 8, and it wasn't too bad, although it definitely got more and more busy as the morning went on.

We actually stood in the cutting line twice. I had my buggy loaded up the first time, but just as we finished, we saw the clerk shelving this turtle fabric. I had bought a yard of it a few weeks ago, with plans of making Ollie a Loopy Lovey, but I really wanted more to make him a matching quilt. So, back in the cutting line we went.

Actually, the cutting line moved pretty quickly, despite some people, like myself, having carts full of various bolts. It was the check-out line that made me get a little fustrated. As we inched our way closer, it became obvious that the cashiers were quite new at their job, having to ask "which button do I push" at almost every transaction. Despite this, people seemed to remain cheerful and patient, chatting to their line-neighbor about their upcoming projects.

Here's a view of the line that Maggie snapped:

And here's what I came out with. This is about $140 worth of flannel for about $35! It doesn't look like a lot, but several are 2, 3 and even 4 yards of fabric. I can't wait to get busy with it, including several rag quilts that will be in my Etsy shop very soon!

Fabric: My True Weakness

Joann's was having a sale... all flannel for $2 a yard. I went to *just* get a yard of green, and maybe a couple yards of girlie prints for wipes. But once I got there, I went a bit nuts. Came over with 16 yards of fabric in 15 different prints/colors. Oops!
Marbled tie-dye colors. I love these, as they coordinate so well with just about anything. These will be used in a couple rag quilts, as well as backings for various things.
Yikes, stripes! These will mostly be used for cloth wipes. Maybe a burp cloth or two.
Jumping frogs on the left will become a Loopy Lovey, and maybe a bib. Crazy flowers on the top will be wipes, bib and burp cloth. And the aliens will become a rag quilt.
The doggie prints on the left will be a rag quilt. And the sea creatures are already on their way to becoming a couple of changing pads. (My newest creation... coming soon to my shop!). I seriously don't have any more room for fabric. I'm recycling an old dresser, using the top as an ironing board/cutting board/craft table. And all three drawers are stuffed with fabric. I also have one of those 3-drawered plastic totes... also crammed packed. Guess I better get sewing and selling!

Etsykids Fabric Swap!

I'm a bit behind in my blogging... but I've been meaning to post this. A few weeks ago, I participated in the Etsykids Fabric Swap, and it was SO much fun!
First of all, for those not familiar with Etsy street teams, they are "... smaller groups of organized Etsy members who network, share skills, and promote their shops and Etsy together. A Team forms around a shared location, crafting medium, or another interest." (http://team.etsy.com/). And Etsykids are all about- you guessed it -KIDS! The members of Etsykids all craft and create for children of all ages. For more info, check out http://www.etsykids.com/.
The theme of our first fabric swap was "Bright Colors". Here are the fat quarters I received...

* The cheerful yellow is from Tiny Stitches. * The floral print is from SJCreations. * The funky dots on green is from KeikiBoutique. * And the fun butterfly print is from Seaside Quilts, who headed up this swap, so a special thank you to her!

Thanks again everybody... and I am already looking foward to the next one!
